Ground-Mounted Solar for Indian Factories: Getting the Layout Right

Spare land around a factory can produce clean, low-cost daytime power. The array layout decides how much energy that land actually delivers over the next twenty-five years.

Many Indian factories have open land inside or next to their premises. A ground-mounted solar plant on that land can supply a meaningful share of daytime power at a predictable cost for more than two decades. The difference between an average and a good plant is usually decided at the layout stage.

Start with a proper site survey

  • Contour survey to understand slopes and drainage
  • Soil investigation for the module mounting structure foundations
  • Location of trees, buildings, chimneys and hills that may cast shadows
  • Distance to the plant's existing substation for the grid connection

Array layout

The layout fixes the number of module rows, their tilt angle and the spacing between them. Rows placed too close shade each other in the winter months, when the sun is low; rows placed too far apart waste land. A shadow analysis for the site's latitude finds the right balance.

Boundary walls, internal roads, cable routes, inverter rooms and lighting poles also need space, and they should be shown on the layout from day one.

Electrical design

  1. String sizing matched to the inverter input range
  2. DC and AC cable sizing to keep losses low
  3. Earthing and lightning protection for the array and equipment
  4. Metering and protection at the point of connection with the plant network

Operation and cleaning

Dust reduces generation noticeably in most Indian locations. Plan water access, walkways and a cleaning schedule as part of the design, not as an afterthought.

How ShaktiPunj helps

We prepare the feasibility report, layout and electrical design, evaluate vendor offers and supervise installation and commissioning, so the plant delivers the generation it was designed for.
